When there is not enough oxygen for cells to operate at maximum ability, they undergo anaerobic respiration, the major product of which is lactic acid. Lactic acid causes immense pain and a burning sensation - muscle fatigue - which is the body's defense against being worked to the point where the muscle cells are destroyed by the buildup of acid and permanent damage is done.

Factors that inhibit muscle contraction?

Muscle fatigue is the main factor that inhibits muscle contraction. Muscles need oxygen and energy to contract and muscle fatigue is the lack of oxygen in a muscle. The build up of lactic acid is a factor of muscle fatigue.

Explain what causes oxygen debt and muscle fatigue?

The production of lactic acid anaerobically...

Muscle fatigue results from the accumulation of lactic acid in muscles because of?

lack of oxygen

How does exercise effect muscle fatigue?

There are various ways through which exercise will effect muscle fatigue. This will enhance blood circulation which will deliver more oxygen to the fatigued muscles. Exercise will also cause lactic acid to be released.

What chemical cause pain and fatigue when anerobic respiration occurs?

Lactic Acid. After the body has used its store of oxygen, pyruvic acid turns to lactic acid (fermentation) which causes muscle ache after running for too long.

What happens at the cellular level during muscle fatigue?

During muscle fatigue, affected muscle groups lose the ability to generate force and the individual will experience a sensation of weakness. Muscle fatigue is comprised of two types of fatigue: neural and metabolic.

When no oxygen is present for muscle cells after glycolysis what will the cell produce?

Lactic Acid :)

Muscle cells in oxygen deprivation convert pyruvate to?

lactic acid

How can a skeletal muscle produce additional ATP when there is not enough oxygen?

Anaerobic fermentation enables a cell to produce ATP in the absence of oxygen but the ATP yield is very limited and the process produces a toxic end product, lactic acid, which is a major factor in muscle fatigue.
