Just like someone rents a DVD from a store, theaters rent the movie to show on their projectors when movies are first released. The more popular the movie, the more theaters will want to rent it and for longer. Whether you go to see the film at the local theater or not, the theater had already paid the film makers in order to be sent a copy of the film to show. Then, when the movie is released on DVD, stores that sell or rent DVDs will buy the DVD version from the film makers to sell or rent for their own profit. For example, if you rented a DVD from Blockbuster, Bluckbuster had already purchased the movie and the producers of the film made money from Blockbuster. Furthermore, many movies can merchandize (sell toys, clothing, and other items that promote the film and or film characters) which can make a lot of money in profits for the film makers.
