Before nationalism a Serbian prince would feel a deeper connection with his horse then with the farmers that work for him (Ernest Gellner, 1998). After Nationalism you could imagine the opposite, it unites the people within a nation together and they gain a stronger relationship to stick together and to keep their national identity intact. One of Gellners's theories or opinions if you will, that Nationalism is only a product of Imperialism to create a stronger economy in a particular nation. It can also cause several nations to have a very strong relationship due to common values.

Ethno-nationalism has served to protect the right to statehood of ethnic minorities under the oppression of powerful empires or to facilitate the unification of people with a common cultural and ethnic heritage who are displaced in numerous nations. It was ethno-nationalism that has created the nations of Germany, Italy, Turkey, Greece, Serbia, Poland, Israel, and Vietnam. Today, ethno-nationalism is increasingly becoming the force that is leading to the independence of Kurdistan after centuries of oppression by Turks, Arabs, and Persians.

Nazism was billed as ultra-nationalism to the people of Germany. Excessive nationalism can lead to prejudice and bigotry on a less dramatic scale.
