agricultural runoff was polluting the large rivers. Consider the farmlands in the Midwest; the Midwest from the Rockies to the Mississippi River is in the drainage basin of the Mississippi river. All the rain water as it dilutes the pesticides and fungicides used by the farmers run off. It finds its way into wells by percolating through the soil into the water table. Eventually ending up in the major rivers flowing into gulf on Mexico. For this reason the pesticide DDT is no longer allowed to be used. There are several other pesticides and fungicides that are on the do not use list.

Fertilizer contains nutrients that help crops grow, but not all of the nutrients (like nitrogen and phosphorus) are used by the crops. The ground water collects these leftover nutrients and carries them into large water bodies, these ecosystems have a natural equilibrium. The extra nutrients build up faster than the system can move back the equilibrium and like crops the nutrients foster faster growth of the plants in the water like algae

Farmers use artificial nitrogen based fertilizers on their land to improve their crops. However, the fertilizer is very soluble and it washes off into the rivers lakes and oceans where it also feeds the aquatic algal plants causing them to grow (bloom) unnaturally lusciously.

The build up of fertilizer will cause algae to grow. The algae that grows will absorb all the oxygen in the water and make all the other plants and animals in the environment die from oxygen lack. When all the oxygen is depleted the algae also dies and the environment becomes a watery wasteland. This process is called eutrophication. So don't use so much fertilizer.

What is the main ingredient in fertilizers that can cause algae bloom?

The main ingredient in fertilizers that can cause algae blooms is phosphorus. When excess phosphorus enters bodies of water, it can promote the growth of algae, leading to harmful algal blooms. These blooms can disrupt aquatic ecosystems and deplete oxygen levels in the water, negatively impacting fish and other marine life.

What is unnatural related to humans about an algal bloom?

Some of the algae that makes up an algal bloom can be toxic. This would probably be the main difference between an algal bloom and humans. Hope this helps!

What causes a freshwater bloom?

A freshwater bloom is a sudden overpopulation of algae. This is caused by excessive nutrients in the water which act like fertilizers to stimulate algal growth. Common causes could be leaking sewage pipes, runoff from a golf course, sudden release of animal manure during a flood, etc.
