I haven't studied this in a long time, but as I remember, osmosis is the movement of water from a high water potential to a lower water potential through a selectively permeable membrane. This has hundreds of uses in plants a animals, so I'm giving an example in each one. In plants, it helps the root hair cells absorb the water from the soil, and transfer it along the cells of the plants and then to the rest of the body. In animals... I'm sorry, I can't remember, but I think it also helps in the transmission of water in the cells
