How does technology help in natural disasters?

During the different stages of a natural disaster, technology can become a useful tool. It can be used to detect a natural disaster, and allow evacuation if necessary, during the disaster - to take action against the disaster itself e.g. putting out fires, and after the disaster, when trying to rescue potentially trapped people, and rebuild in preperation for future events.

I don't think there is a definite way to stop natural disasters, but we can lessen the damage. For example, large buildings have spring mechanisms built into them so the shock is absorbed. Sandbags can be placed to deter floods. I don't think we can do anything against hurricanes and tornadoes, but if we can, someone say so!

Almost none. The only disasters in which we can exert some degree of control over are avalanches, landslides, and to a lesser degree flooding. We can reduce major avalanches by setting off smaller ones, so snow does not accumulate to make a big one. In some instances we can fasten bolts and wire frames and even plant trees to help stabilize slopes to reduce the chance of a landslide.

Artificial levees can sometimes keep streams within their banks, though the issue is complicated here as this can make flooding downstream worse. Planting trees and laying down permeable surfaces in place of ordinary asphalt or cement reduces runoff, which can reduce flooding.

In all other respects we are powerless to stop natural disasters, but we can work to predict and prepare for them.
