There are several ways to harness sunlight energy. Sometimes, silicon panels are used. They are semiconductors of electricity. When a photon (a particle of light) from the sun strikes a chip, the photon unbinds several electrons in the semiconductor and creates a voltage. The chip is connected to an external circuit. Another new and popular method of capturing sunlight energy is through solar cells which consist of several layers of material including a semiconductor which allows for the transfer of electrons throughout the cell. The cell is also connected to an external circuit where it powers a device.
