With antibiotics that are specifically picked by your doctor to kill the streptococcus bacteria that is what causes strep throat. It is usually relatively easy to treat in otherwise healthy people as bacteria go.

For the sore throat, you can gargle with a warm and mild salt water solution, or there are sprays and lozenges for sore throats that will help, too. Ask the pharmacist for recommendations.

Drink lots of water and get rest while your body is fighting the infection. Even if it hurts to swallow, you must keep drinking and getting nourishing foods. Try chicken soup or other soups if solid food is hard to swallow at first. Avoid dairy products that can increase or thicken the mucus.

Keep your hands clean by washing frequently, use a tissue to cover your mouth if you cough or sneeze, and don't share drinking glasses or eating utensils. And, no kissing until you are over it, so you don't pass the infection to others.

Home remedies for strep throat include garlic, honey, olive leaf extract, and tea tree oil, or just gargling with warm salt water. Due to the fact that Strep Throat is very contagious and spreads easily, it is important to remember that home remedies won't completely replace seeing your doctor.

Penicillin V is the drug of choice for strep throat. You have to give treatment for ten days. If you give treatment for shorter duration, you may land up in not getting cured of the disease. You may get rheumatic fever after three weeks. The usual dose is penicillin V 250 mg three times a day for ten days. Two times a day can do. But if patient forgets one dose, it becomes once a day. That is not enough. So wise physician prefer to give dose three times a day.If patient is allergic to penicillin, the drug of choice is erythromycin. It has to be given three times a day for ten days. I prefer to give tab azithromycin. 250 mg to 500 mg once a day for 9 days should do. Depending on the weight of the patient. The blood level will last for ten days. As the half life of the drug is long.
