Instead of using abdominal thrusts, chest thrusts are used. The fists are placed against the middle of the breastbone, and the motion of the chest thrust is in and downward, rather than upward

What in the world is the Heimlich Maneuver?

The Heimlich Maneuver is one method to remove an object from a person's windpipe that can not breathe. The AHA now calls it the Abdominal Thrust Maneuver, which is more descriptive of the action taken. See related link.

Why is Henry Heimlich famous?

Dr. Henry Heimlich was the inventor of the Heimlich Maneuver, which is an effective method of dislodging food or any other foreign object which is lodged in someone's throat and which is causing that person to choke.

What kind or type of injury or emergency is the Heimlich Maneuver used for?

It is used when a person is choking on food or a swallowed object, which is blocking the airway to the lungs. The Heimlich compression is an effort to dislodge and regurgitate the food or other object from the throat.

What happends if your food goes down into your trachea?

The trachea is commonly called the windpipe. It is covered by the epiglottis so when a person swallows food it does NOT go into the trachea. If food enters the trachea it can clog it completely and cause a person to choke to death. If the food goes down the trachea, it can lodge in the main windpipe. If the food manages to go further, it could go to the right or left side when the trachea divides into the right and left bronchi. Air could be blocked past the food which would cause the person to suffocate. If food enters the trachea, it generally causes a person to cough. Hopefully, the person will cough forcefully enough to remove the food. If they do not, this is when the Heimlich maneuver needs to be performed in which a person stands behind the victim and helps them force air out of the lungs with a quick hugging type maneuver.

Does slapping a person on the back when they are choking help?

Slapping a person in the back when they are choking can help, but it can also cause injury. The Heimlich maneuver is always best when a person is choking.

What is the name of a commonly used first aid technique for a choke victim?

Should one start chest compressions CPR on a person who passes out after unsuccessful attempts at Heimlich?

Chest compressions are for cardiac problems, to maintain some blood circulation. The Heimlich Maneuver is for a blocked airway. If the person has a blocked airway and Heimlich did not clear it, chest compressions are not going to help. Find other ways to clear the airway.

What to do if a child is drowning and you do know CPR?

There is some controversy. Some say five thrusts of the Heimlich maneuver should be performed if the person has been underwater and the person is unconscious followed by CPR if there is no pulse/breathing. Others say that if no pulse/breathing is present, CPR should be started immediately without any thrusts of the Heimlich. Check with local authorities to find out what is routinely done in your area.
