How is the billing of electricity done?

Each household has an energy meter. A representative of the company visits the house and records the usage total on it. The previous amount on the meter is deducted from the new one, to give the usage since the last check. This value is then multiplied by the unit cost for the electricity and any extras are added (late fees, administration/billing costs, outstanding debts or credits, etc.). The bill is then sent to the appropriate household.

Your meter registers the units of electrical energy that you use. A unit is equal to one kilowatt used for one hour, and is also called a kilowatt-hour or kWh. In the UK a unit costs around £0.15.

The meter is read by the electricity company at regular intervals when someon calls round. Smart metering send the reading back to the company without the need for anyone to call.
