This collectible card game is played with two or more players. Each creates a deck of cards consisting of artifacts, creatures, sorcery's, Instants, enchantments, and planeswalkers and land (mana) that they use to fight the other individuals. Players follow a strict set of turn sequences. Each player starts with 20 life points. The one that survives longest wins.

The game combines elements of luck and skill. The luck comes in being able to obtain the cards you need to support your deck, and then in the luck of the draw of the cards. The skill comes from being able to build a set of cards that can provide the offensive and defensive power necessary to win. It also involves knowing when to play certain cards.

There are a number of types of lands (mana sources): Plains(white), Swamp(black), Mountain(red), Island(blue), and Forest(green). There are also artifacts, creatures, instants, sorceries, and enchantments.

Magic: The Gathering is a collectible card game created mathematics professor richard garfield and introduced in 1993 by wizards of the coast Magic the Gathering, is a TCG (Trading Card Game) or also a CCG (Collectible Card Game). It is played by building a deck of cards, usually 60, and "dueling" with one or more opponents. The object of the game is to defeat your opponents. This can be achieved by lowering their Life Total to zero, which starts at 20, or by causing the opponent to deck out, or "draw" all of their cards from their deck. You draw and play cards on a turn based structure. There are several steps to the game: Untap, Upkeep, Draw, Main Phase 1, Combat Phase, Main Phase 2, End Phase or if a player has more than 7 cards in their hand, Discard Phase. To play a "spell card" you must have the appropriate "mana" or "land" cards on the field. Combat is the most common way to deal out damage to your opponents life total, and it is done by having your "creatures" attack the opponent. There are exceptions to the rules but that is the basic concept. For more details on how to play the game check out: www.magicthegathering.com, and look for the "New to Magic?" navigational link.

Via two methods, you win if you have no opponents left or if an effect states that you win the game (E.g Battle of Wits: At the beginning of your upkeep if you have 200 cards in your library, you win the game). But also note that in multiplayer matches effects stating that you win the game instead causes all your opponents to lose (This may not cause the game to end if the limited range of influence option is being used; see rule 801.).

So the next question is obviously: how do my opponents lose the game?

They lose the game when they have zero life totals (or less), ten poison counters, if they are required to draw a card from an empty library, an effect states that they lose the game or if they actively concede the game.

Note: The game ends in a draw if it gets stuck in a sequence of events that loop endlessly that no player can stop. In tournament play, if you could do something endlessly and choose to you must declare an actual number of times you intend to do this. Your opponent is within their rights to say "Go ahead. Do it that many times". If this happens, a judge may be called and if you fail to do the stated action the specified number of times within the alloted time of the round, you may lose the game or draw the game, dependent on other factors.

Note: Certain abilities can alter the wining and losing requirements of a game, such as Platinum Angel.

In Magic the Gathering you play a wizard. Each player starts with 20 life points. They lose when the 20 life points are gone. The cards represent spells you can cast and the energy it requires to cast them.

The energy is in the form of mana of different colors representing the land that the energy originates from, plains = white, woods - green, mountains - red, swamps - black and islands - blue. Land cards and some artifacts, and even some creatures, can provide mana.

Spells can be cast to create damage on your opponent or their creatures, or to create creatures of your own, or to heal oneself. Simple spells and creatures take only a single mana point, others can require many mana points.

You trade your cards to create a deck that takes advantage of the types of land and the spells you have.

There are three levels of cards the lowest is 'common' followed by 'uncommon' and the highest 'rare.'

To play Magic: the Gathering, you must collect cards and assemble a deck. Players then take turns drawing and playing cards using what is called "mana". See the links that accompany this post for all the rules. It will take you some time to learn completely, but it is worth the effort.

Getting started

lands: you can play one land card onto the battlefeild on each of your turns. Tapping them (turning them sideways) gives you the mana you need to cast spells

Spells

spells pretty much make up the game. Spells include creatures, artifacts, and scorceries. You can cast a spell anytime you can cast a creature (so you can cast it before or after you attack.)

Tapping

you tap your cards (turning them sideways) to show they have been used. you tap your lands to pay a spell's mana cost. when you use a creature to attack the opponent or the opponent's creature, you tap your creature.

Casting creatures and other spells

you cast a spell by paying its mana cost. For example: if you have a spell that costs 4 random mana and two swamps(swamps are black magic's mana) for that spell you need six mana-four mana of any colors (on a card its a grey circle with the number of how many of any color mana card you need) and two black mana (its a black circle with a skull in the middle of it). You'll need to tap two swamps plus four other lands of any types to cast this spell. Most spells enter the battlefield after they're cast. Sorceries and instants are the only exeptions. After you cast a sorcery or an instant, you do what the card says and then put it into your graveyard (discard pile).

Untapping

At the start of your turn, you untap (turn upright) all of your tapped cards. Then they are ready for you to use them again.

Hope this helped
