Texas has rich fertile soil that is good for farming throughout the state. The economy relies heavily on cotton production. Also in mid Texas and south Texas it is known for its oil. A lot of people in Houston make a living off of oil. the southern tip of Texas also has citrus orchards

because Texas is a very dry dry state so you can not really grow crops in that kind of land so the only way left to get food was by buying some and that was usually expensive and Spain didn't have that kind of money to buy the food for the settlers. So Spain would need ships and lots of money and people willing to go to the land which had hostile Indian's.
