How is the scale on a map like the scale on a model?

A map is a picture of a location. The scale is how big the map is in relation to the actual area being shown. Usually the scale is simply a few words in one corner similar to "1 inch equals 1 mile"....

A map scale is a bar with the real measurement on the top, and the scale to the country on the bottom. I doubt this helps, but hey, maybe.
