Raw, frequently rainy, and much chillier than most tourists apparently expect. Northern California (where San Francisco is) and Southern California (where Los Angeles is) are two very different climates.
I was born and raised in the world famous Wine Country north of San Francisco.
The greater region is called the North Coast collectively. We are very proud of our region.
The closer that you get to the ocean and the actual coast, the foggier and wetter it gets in the wintertime. It can also get extremely windy sometimes, and you can see how the houses sitting right on the ocean around Bodega Bay for example (where many famous movies have been filmed by the way) are built to resist the high winds with their sloping roofs facing the sea. This is the Pacific Ocean, the world's largest ocean, and you can really experience the power of it here, huge waves, etc. There is less variation in the temperature. It rarely goes over 65 and rarely below 35.
As you move inland in Sonoma County for example, temperatures will go higher and lower on any given day than on the coast. There are frosts in January and February and last winter it went below 0 on several days and killed all of my tropical plants on my deck. It can go as high as 75 degrees on rare days in the wintertime. There can be many sunny clear days, but not very warm. The sun is very weak up here in winter.
The fog gets very heavy the closer it gets to spring.
We are fairly far north here, and it gets dark early around 5:30.
It can be very grey and overcast with periods of heavy rain depending on the year and EL NINO type phenomenon.
It normally rains about 30 or more inches a year, but I can remember times when it has rained over 60 inches. THAT IS MORE THAN SEATTLE!!!!
The highest hills usually get some snow once or twice a year, but snowfall is rare at lower elevations, although it can happen but melts after one day!
During winter in California it is like a warm spring day in New Jersey.
The weather in California during Christmas time is 50 degrees - 65 degrees Fahrenheit
California is a big state and the climate varies somewhat. Some averages in
various cities are: (temperature are in degrees Fahrenheit)
Redding ( HI 55- LO 36)
Sacramento ) HI 53 - HI 39)
San Francisco ( HI 55- LO 42)
Bakersfield (HI 56 - LO 39)
Los Angeles ( HI 68- LO 48)
San Diego (HI 65 - LO)
