Pepto-Bismol's main active ingredient is bismuth subsalicylate. This benign antacid works well for the job it's given, but a side effect is that it tends to darken the stool, sometimes nearly to black. It's a harmless, if scary side effect.

Note that lower GI bleeding generates black, tarry stools -- a serious symptom that needs a doctor's care instantly. This is different from what you've described in that the stools are not tarry.

Ones stools can stay black or a darker colour for a few days after you've stopped taking pepto bismol. Individual bowel movements and your age can determine how long Pepto Bismol stays in your system.

Yes, but so does internal bleeding! If stool is still back after 3 days of not taking pepto, please go to a doctor! Do not take Pepto your stool was already black, but if it was fine before and is now discolored then that is completely normal!

What is the cause of black spots on the tongue?

That could be a sign of a very serious medical condition, black dots along the gum lines is known for gum cancer. Ask your dentist to take a look at it, and do it soon! Pepto Bismol can turn your tongue black and also your stool. It often scares the heck out of people. Pepto Bismol has an ingredient in it that causes this. It's used for an upset tummy, indigestion and diarrhea. This is the only cause I've found in researching "black tongue." If you have taken anything for an upset tummy or diarrhea then phone your pharmacist and ask them your question. It may well have that one ingredient that is causing your tongue to turn black.

What causes black poop?

Depends- is the fecal matter from a newborn, a child, an adult, or an animal? In most cases, with the exception of a newborn, the color of fecal matter is directly due to what has been ingested. Since this question is under stomach flu, medications can cause abnormal coloration, as well as the ingestion of mucus from being sick.
