Most females are in heat for three weeks. They may have a bloody discharge the whole time, however, they usually get pregnant one day during the second week. Bloody drainage begins to subside after she becomes pregnant. If she does not get pregnant, the drainage will stop usually during the end of the second week or possibly the early part of the third. If your dog is pregnant or you have any questions about it, call your local vet. You can wait to the 4th week of gestation, (9wk canine gestation), and the vet will get a better picture during an ultrasound. During an ultra-sound, the vet can see the heart beat, and get a rough idea on how many pups there are. Pretty cool thing.

∙ 11y agoThe female dog does not start bleeding after being bred. The only time you will see a small amount of bleeding is the first 2-5 days of her heat cycle. The heat period lasts about 2-3 weeks and this is the only time she can conceive. A female dog will come into heat approximately every 6 months.
