Some are infectious for only a couple of days; some are infectious until after your body has been buried. Some may be infectious for longer than that; bodies of the victims of the 1917 influenza strain have recently been exhumed, and were discovered to STILL be dangerous.

A viral cold may be contagious for seven to ten days; cold sores or genital herpes may be contagious throughout life during the time when an outbreak is present, just before an outbreak, or during symptoms. HIV is contagious throughout life. Ask your health care provider for advice specific to your infection.
Note: A viral infection (caused by a virus) is different from a bacterial infection (caused by bacteria) and is not treatable by antibiotics.

∙ 9y agoDifferent viruses have different contagious periods. In general, as long as the person has active signs of infection, they are contagious. They are typically contagious for some time afterwards too. The contagious period from the common cold or stomach flu can be from one day to two weeks.
