Note that is not safe, and it is not an effective method of dieting. Your body will consume its own muscles for energy, your metabolism will be altered, and there will be other problems.

AnswerBasically your body will find stuff e.g. muscle to survive off for a while. Then after eating EVERYTHING possible you will start to deteriorate. This is quite terrifying but I was anorexic for 6 years. Not eating is bad and will cause serious damage to your system.

You will not die! People are so silly. Most Americans are so fat, it would be a welcome vacation to their bodies. You will be drinking waterm but you better be taking a multivitamin, because you could have some not so good effects after the 40 days (hair loss, goiters, conditions related to calcium and iron deficiencies). 40 days is actually the longest you could go without food before you start to jeopardize your organs (your body will have to find a food source once all your fat is gone and it will start working on your muscles). You will lose an extreme amount of weight and you really need to 1) be under the care of a physician the whole time and 2) no exertion beyond what is necessary. You will lose about a pound a day every day for the first week, then 2 pounds every day in the second week and then it will pretty much alternate like that. Depending on how much you weigh you could be half your body weight after 40 days! It is really hard to do, and you will definitely need support. Do it after the holidays. You will have to slowly work your way back to eating again. You cannot just eat what ever you want right after. In fact you will be doing liquids and working your way back to solids starting with fruits and veggies. Dizziness, irritability, restlessness the first few weeks. People will question you a lot. They'll think you have and eating disorder or hate their cooking. Most people think that someone will die in a week without eating. The truth is unless you are anorexic or extremely malnourished you won't.

Yes, assuming they have enough fat. This is one of the primary purposes of fat (next to cushioning organs). If a human has enough of it, then theoretically they could live without eating for several months. Problems arise soon after that though, when certain water-soluble vitamins are depleted.

Drinking is another matter entirely however, as we go through water at a much faster pace. Depending on humidity, current moisure content, how large your nose is, whether you breath through your mouth, how much you sweat, and so forth, survival without drinkable water is usually measured in days.
