Usually when you are in jail without being charged with a crime is because they are investigating the crime and they have yet to figure out what charges to press on you at this time. This is usually accept by a judge to hold you.

∙ 14y ago(in the US) It can depend on the laws of your particular state. Some states still have a charge "Held for Investigation" while many others either do not, or have done away with it. In any case, it is/was usually not more than 12 hours.

In those jurisdictions where it does exist it is generally known as detainment for investigation (or similar wording). It fulfills the necessity for investigating more deeply into circumstances which consist of 'reasonable suspicion, but do not immediately rise to the level of 'probable cause.'
