The first king of Israel Saul ruled over Israel for roughly a period of forty years.

He started his reign as very good king, but then he fell away from God and the evil spirits started to trouble him. The main reason was as he took many wives from oitside Isa real he fell into their ways of idol worship , asnd refused to listen to the prophet Samuel.

another answer

Saul reigned for two years, as stated in 1 Samuel 13:1. And nowhere is he accused of marrying outside the faith or of idolatry.

why did david run and whodid he run from

David in 1 Samuel was being pursued by Saul the first King of the united tribes of Israel.

When David was younger, probably early teens he had killed the giant Goliath for which Saul was grateful.

Later David came to the court to play his harp for Saul because he had a troubled spirit. He had disobeyed God and this was his punishment.

David later became an impressive commander, killing 10,000's of the enemy. But all of this made Saul jealous. One day when David came to play his harp Saul took his spear out and attempted to pin David to the wall with it. But David was too quick.

This troubled spirit combined with his jealousy that he had been more effective in war than had Saul caused Saul to chase David all over Israel.

To answer the top question is tough. In the Tanakh it suggest that the chase years were no more than 18 months.

One Biblical writer suggests it was 15 years and another says 20 years.

When you add up the times he likely spent in various places it appears that 8 years would be the safest educated guess.

What was the purpose of David's army collecting foreskins of his enemies to bring to Saul?

King Saul was jealous of David, but Saul offered his daughter, Michal to David as a wife. David said he was too poor to give a dowry to Saul for his daughter, but Saul said he wanted no dowry, but wanted David to avenge him (Saul) upon the Philistines by bringing 100 foreskins of the enemy back to him. But Saul's motive was not what he said, but rather he wanted David to engage in battle with the Philistines in hopes that David would be killed.
