Washington joined the Virginia militia in 1752, at the age of 20 and commanded the Virginia Regiment until 1759 (7 years), after which he returned to Mount Vernon. When the Revolution began, he was appointed Commander-in-Chief of the Continental Army in 1775, a commission he held until his resignation in 1783 (8 years). Following his two terms as President, he was commissioned in 1798 by President John Adams to again command the Army of the United States in a prospective war with France, which never took place. In that capacity, he served senior officer of the US Army for about a year and a half.
