they fought until one of them was down/killed, then the emperor would decide if the winner was going to live or be killed. hope this helps. he usually decided based on how the crowded responded to the fight i.e. if the crowd cheered he let the guy live if they booed then he had the guy killed.
While that is correct, it should be noted that not all gladiatorial fights resulted in a winner and a loser, sometimes it was just a case of nobody winning. In that instance the emperor, or editor if the emperor was absent could reprieve both fighters.
DIMWITS!!!!U GUYS R NOT SMART
To whoever said "You guys are not smart", it is you who are not smart, obviously, the gladiator fights lasted for around 600 years. Simple math, friends, simple math.
A gladiator exhibition would perhaps be held once a year. The average was somewhere around three years and its not beyond a possibility that some gladiators went their entire five years of servitude without ever fighting, just as some Roman soldiers spent their entire 20 years in the army without ever being in a battle. Contrary to popular belief, gladiatorial combats were not every day occurrences, or weekly occurrences for that matter. Due to the expense involved, gladiatorial bouts were reserved for major public celebrations and memorials.

The first gladiatorial combat was held in Rome in 246 BC. Gladiator fights had been going on in the area of Italy known as Campania for many years before this time.

To our present day way of thinking, gladiatorial fights would be horrible because of the death and injury that was sometimes involved. To the ancient way of thinking it was a contest of bravery and courage. We can't make a valid judgment about an ancient custom because we are living in a different time with different ways of thinking especially in the area of the value of a human life.
Extremely! Hundreds would flock to the hippodromes to see the fascinating but cruel sport. Many Romans lived for the gladiator/beast fights too and all the other games.

Impossible to know. All gladiatorial fights were not recorded nor the deaths that occurred.
Events like rock concerts are held today in many modern day coliseums. As for the ancient Romans, the Emperors used the coliseums to entertain the people. Many events were held, wild animal fights and gladiator battles, as well as sea battles with the coliseum filled with water. An interesting fact is that the gate you entered and your seat was related to your position in society.
The Gladiator wasn't much like the Gladiators that you see on the television nowadays. A Roman Gladiator wore armour and carried a variety of weapons. As many of them were slaves and criminals they fought for one reason only: freedom, as famous gladiators could be freed from slavery. Because of this the Gladiator would fight extremely hard and often fights were to the death. This type of entertainment was very popular with the Romans and many captured soldiers were forced to fight as Gladiators in a bid to gain their freedom. They trained for the fights very hard and there were special Gladiator centre's where they would practice using the different weapons and try to work out ways of avoiding being hurt.
Gladiator fights involved men who were prisoners of war, slaves, or unwanted and they were armed with weapons and light armor and fought to the death. At many gladiatorial fighting locations, animals like lions and bears were starved and forced to fight themselves and gladiators. The most famous gladiator fighting arena was the Roman Colosseum. These fights were very bloody and brutal, and they served to entertain the Roman people just like sports entertain us today.
