The healing of a fractured rib is dependant upon a number of things. Provided you rest and do not over-exert yourself, a typical period of convalescence for a middle-aged person is three - four weeks. During this time you will certainly experience discomfort when breathing deeply, and especially coughing or sneezing.
During this period your rib's membrane, called the periosteum, will heal, helping to reduce the often agonising discomfort you experience.
Typical medications to take would be paracetamol, or acetaminophen. NSAIDS (Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs), can help. ibuprofen, Aspirin, diclofenac, etc. However, NSAIDS can have substantial side-effects. Taking NSAID's with food and plenty of water can help. However, do not take any NSAID if you have any renal (kidney) problems, or have problems with your digestive track, such as ulcers or duodenal problems.

You should be able to feel a marked improvement in as little as 3-5 weeks, but it's not unheard of for severely cracked ribs to still be painful as much as 6 months down the line or more. However... After the incident, you should see a significant pain reduction in at most 5 weeks, and hopefully in as little as 1 or 2 weeks. If this doesn't happen, if pain gets worse, if breathing becomes difficult, or you develop a cough (especially a productive cough), or expectorate blood, you need to see your doc right away.

∙ 12y agoIt actually depends on which rib that is broken. The most commonly fractured ribs are the 7th and 10th. It can take some weeks to heal but in some cases it also can take months.

well, it depends how hard you get hit, a rib injury is a very common injury to have but if you do have a rib injury it will take 5 or 6 weeks for it could heal but whatever you do, do not break your ribs because it will be even more deadly.
How are broken ribs set?
Usually, they aren't. Most rib fractures are just left to heal on their own. Often a rib belt will be provided or sometimes the rib cage will be taped, but if it's a minor fracture, you'll be told to just take it easy and don't make it worse. On the other hand, if a rib is completely broken, with sharp edges and a possibility of puncturing a lung, it will be surgically wired to minimize further risk. Only an x-ray will determine if the break is severe enough to justify surgery.
