• It varies from breed of dog to breed of dog. Generally smaller breed dogs live longer. There is a limit to this, as some mini's are genetic aberrations that die from defects as they age, often caused because some body parts/internal organs grow faster than the rest of the body, causing serious problems.
  
  Medium-Large breeds live 11 to 14 years on average, Large/Very Large breeds live 8 to 12 years, smaller breeds generally 14 to 22.
  
  The "7 years to 1 human" type of math is a complete myth. By that logic a dog that lives to 20 would be 140 years old, and a 10 year old would be 70. That being the case, why would both 10 and 18 year old animals have higher risks of cancer and other age related ailments (arthritis, deaf, blind, etc).
  
  If you wanted to make the "math" for it, then you'd have to base it roughly on a 100 year life span, the smaller breed would age roughly 5 years to every human year ... thus 5 times 20 would be 100 years ... and then a larger breed which lives to 12 ... would be about 9 years per human year... but even this isn't valid!
  
  Generally through 18 months is a puppy stage, some dogs actually maturing by 10 months, others are adolescent through their 3rd or 4th human year! Dogs are generally termed Adult when their growth slows (IE they aren't getting taller, longer, etc), and then are considered senior as early as 7 and as late as 12 ... even the smaller breeds by 12 are starting to show "age" related slowing and increased medical issues.
  
  So your real answer: The average range is 8 to 18 depending on the breed, with some living to 22 (I believe I had heard one at 25 but there wasn't enough proof for when the dog was born, it was found as a stray).

EG: like Laika that lives in the peoples mind forever and also especially in the scientists minds who was sent to the moon by Russia before the first human being was sent.
