According to Energizer's web site, Lithium batteries have a shelf life of 10-15 years. Note that "lithium" refers to disposable batteries, as distinguished from lithium-ion batteries, which are rechargable.

There are two types of lithium batteries. Single-use devices cannot be recharged and must be discarded after use. They have a storage lifetime, which is the period of time that they can be left dormant and still provide acceptable performance in use, and a use lifetime which is the period during which they will power the device in which they are installed; this is based upon the energy stored in the battery and the energy used by the device. Rechargeable batteries can have energy stored in them again when they have been exhausted. Their lifetime is usually defined as the number of recharge cycles that they can be expected to provide. This is based upon the chemistry used and the details of the battery design.

It is suggested that lithium ion batteries (the kind found in laptops, ipods, phones, etc.) be replaced once the capacity drops below 80% of its original capacity. This is simply to ensure that the battery will last enough between charges to carry out the tasks required within that time. If the battery is not used or used very lightly, one could wait longer before replacing the battery as 80% of the original capacity would still be plenty.

Some companies such as Energizer make disposable lithium batteries. For those, just replace/recycle them when the charge is depleted.

Although some last one or two years, many are built to last up to 15 years of use. However, leaving them without use usually decreases the ability of the battery to last long.
