Young mountain lion cubs learn valuable hunting skills long before they are taken on hunt. They play-stalk their mothers and each other, launching sneak attacks, learning how to be patient, stealthy, and capitalize on the element of surprise. As they play and tussle, they learn valuable lessons in how to gain the upper hand over their prey. Once cubs are old enough to travel distances and are big and strong enough to hunt, a mother cougar takes them on hunts and teaches them how to find and kill food. Mountain lion mothers do not send their cubs away from them until she has taught them how to survive without her.
The lioness will take care of cubs until they are up to two years old. The cubs are nursed until they are 7 to 8 months old.
