Answer
"How long do traffic infractions affect insurance costs? Speeding tickets? DWI? accidents?"
Most states keep speeding tickets on your record for three years. Typically this is the time period used by most insurance companies to determine your premium. The same is true for accidents. However I am starting to see some companies do a five year check, especially on a business policy.
DWI normally remains on your MVR for a ten year period. How the insurance company treats a DWI depends on the individual company.
Your insurance carrier does not necessarily review your driving record every year unless you drive a company vehicle or CMV. They will always check when you first apply and if there are any substantial changes. In other words do not call your insurance carrier and notify them that you received a speeding ticket.
Laws vary considerably by state. The only way to know for sure what will be placed on your MVR is to contact the DMV in your state. Insurance companies are now increasing premiums by as much as 25 % for just one speeding ticket so it pays to contest any traffic ticket that you receive rather than just paying the fine.
