It depends on the temperature, size of the chicken, and how well you want to cook your chicken, but I would suggest putting it in the oven on 350 until the chicken changes color so that it looks cooked, then insert a toothpick or stick inside the meat to see if it is pure white or still red inside. If it is red, then it is not cooked yet and will need a little bit longer. 15 minutes per pound at 350 degrees 15 minutes per pound at 350 degrees

You should cook a whole chicken for 20 minutes per pound pound at 350⁰ F. The internal temperature should read 165 degrees F. Or 40 minutes per kilogram at 180⁰C.

That all depends on what portion of the chicken you're cooking, the size of the portion, what temperature you're cooking at, and whether you're cooking it in a liquid, etc.

No matter what your means of preparation are, however, you should cook chicken to 165F (74C) internal temperature, taken from the thickest part of the chicken. Again, depending on the method of cooking and the portion of chicken that you're cooking, it takes varying times to get the chicken to that temperature. For example, cooking a boneless, skinless chicken breast in the oven at 400F takes about 20-24 minutes to cook thoroughly, where as a bone-in, skin-on chicken breast cooking at the same temperature takes 40-45 minutes.

If you're cooking a whole chicken, unstuffed, in the oven at 350F, some basic recommended times are:

  • 2.5 - 3 lbs - 75-90 minutes
  • 3 - 4 lbs - 90-105 minutes
  • 4 - 6 lbs - 105-120 minutes

Again, these are just recommendations. Always check with an internal thermometer if you are unsure whether your chicken is fully cooked.

  • 20 minutes per lb.20 minutes added at the end. If you have a 3 lb. chicken then cook it for an hour. You can check to be sure it's fully cooked by pulling the leg away a little and see if the juices are clear (it's cooked) or if it's a little pink (it's not done.)
  • The time your chicken needs to bake in the oven does depend on the baking temperature and size/thickness/bone in or out of the meat. To be sure that it is cooked thoroughly, use a Cooking or Meat Thermometer to assure the inner most meat is at the proper and safe temperature of 165° to 170°F.
  • I have been cooking whole chickens the same way for over 20 years and this is what I do: I put the oven on 350 degrees and make sure it is at that temperature when I put a rinsed and patted dry bird in the oven. I cook it at this temperature for 15 minutes per pound. Once the time is up, I remove it from the oven and cover it tightly with aluminum foil for 15 minutes before carving.
