Xbox Live Gold Membership and Microsoft Points are two separate things altogether. The 1600 points you are refering to are Microsoft Points, used to buy Add-ons, Xbox Live Arcade Games, Premium Themes and the like. This is completely independent of the Xbox Live Gold Membership, which deals with Online Play. In order to utilize Xbox Live Gold Membership, you must either buy a pre-paid card which states the amount of time you are buying, or initiate a pay plan with a credit/debit card.
In short, assuming you are looking for Online Play, the 1600 points you purchased are useless
