Latex Primer dries fairly quickly. It will depend on the humidity levels in the home and the surface its applied to. On new drywall which the surface is more porous and will absorb more primer vs previously painted. Usually you can apply a top coat in 2 - 4 hours. Rick The Renovator

Can you use an oil kilz then use latex paint on wall board?

yes Yes, an oil paint will adhere to latex. It doesn't work in reverse, latex will not adhere to oil that is dry, but oil adheres to dry latex. If you were a purist, though, you would sand down the woodwork before repainting it. That would give the best result.

Can you put latex primer under latex paint?

In most cases yes. Primer is applied according to what it is going on, not what is going over it. - Latex / acrylic / water-based primers are good over drywall, stucco, brick, patches and repairs made with polyfil or other drywall patching compounds, paper, and many other porous materials. Once the primer is applied and dry any type of paint may be painted over it.

Can alkyd oil be painted over Kilz 2 Latex primer?

Yes, but be sure the kilz is completely dry before applying the paint. The Kilz formula is such that it has no effect on the application of water borne paint, when it is completely dry.

Can you put an oil based paint over a latex primer?

You can use it, but it won't last long. Use an oil based primer for oil based paint. The oil-based paint will eventually break down the latex primer. Latex can be painted over oil-based primer, but not the other way 'round. Kilz is your best bet for priming over wood cabinets. Kilz hides things like knot holes, burns, water damage, etc. If your cabinets have knotholes, I would dab the knotholes with primer, let dry, then paint everything with your particular primer. A quick scuff with 150-grit sandpaper would be a good idea also. Hope this helps, if so, please "Recommend Contributor"

Can you use water base primer over oil base paint before top coating with latex paint?

You can always paint latex ( water based )over an oil based paint as the latex just dries on the surface. However don't paint an oil based over a latex paint. Oil based paints need to absorb into the wood or other surfaces or it will just dry and flake off. For more information on the differences and when or not to use a latex or oil paint please see the following article. . http://www.ehow.com/how_4713170_between-latex-oil-base-paint.html
