It took me almost three weeks. They just have to take their time verifying your paperwork and whatnot. Besides your first week is unpaid so you have to keep that in mind and if you are granted benefits, you won't get them until your third week of claiming them. It never hurts to call them.

Well, that all depends on what was the outcome why you were separated from your job, if it was a no fault of your own. Here in New Jersey and many States they set a penalty of up to 6 weeks if you were fired, Keep in mind if you were fired for misconduct you will be mailed a letter that you do not qualify for benefits for 6 weeks from the date you file without retroactive pay, if you were lay-ed off, or your hours were cut then you will have no problems of receiving within a week. I was fired Sept 22, 2009 I filed that day and receiving a letter for a phone interview on Oct 8th during the interview via Phone I explained why I was terminated ;fortunately my story was the same in which the company stated but the failed to mention a few things which was in my favor. On the 14th my unemployment was in my direct Deposit account I receive from the State of New Jersey the maximum of 601.00 weekly and I will be moving to San Antonio Texas. There are times when people do have to wait a bit longer, keep in mind if you were fired don't let anyone tell you that you will not receive unemployment that is false, you have to do commit a "Gross Misconduct" to be denied benefits, Good luck.

NYS Department of Labor web site: http://www.labor.state.ny.us/ui/faq.shtm

Q: What employment do I need in order to qualify for benefits?

A: To qualify for benefits:

  1. You must have worked and been paid wages for employment in at least two calendar quarters in your base period,

    AND

You must have been paid at least $1600 in wages in one of the calendar quarters in your base period,

    AND

The total wages paid to you in your base period must be one and one-half times your high quarter wages. The amount of high quarter earnings used to determine if you meet this requirement will not be greater than $8,910. Earnings in the other base period quarters must total at least one-half of $8,910, or $4,455.

  2. If you meet the requirements in the Basic base period, the Basic base period will be used to establish your claim.
  3. If you do not meet the requirements in the Basic base period, it will be determined whether you qualify using the Alternate base period. If you qualify using the Alternate base period, the Alternate base period will be used to establish your claim.
  4. If you qualify under the Basic base period, but you think using the Alternate base period would result in a higher benefit rate, you may apply within 10 days from the date of the initial monetary notice to have your rate recalculated using the Alternate base period.
  5. If you do not qualify using the Basic or Alternate base period and you received Workers' Compensation payments or Volunteer Firefighters' benefits during the Basic base period, the Basic base period may be extended back up to 2 calendar quarters depending on the number of base period quarters in which you received these benefits.
  6. If you do not qualify in any of the above base periods, you have employment in the calendar quarter in which you filed, you are still unemployed after that quarter ends, and you think that you may qualify using this most recent employment, you should apply again for benefits after the current calendar quarter ends.

Please note the following:

  1. Before applying to use the Alternate base period, you should be aware that once wages are used to establish a claim, they cannot be used to establish a subsequent claim. Once you choose to use the wages in the most recent completed calendar quarter, you cannot use these wages again. This may affect your entitlement to a subsequent claim.
  2. Any wages paid to you for employment that is determined to have ended because of misconduct or a criminal act cannot be used to establish a claim or in the calculation of your benefit rate.
  3. If you are filing successive unemployment insurance claims, you must have new wages of at least five times your benefit rate in the benefit year to qualify for a new claim.

Sec. 520. Base period. A claimant`s "base period" is one of the following:

For the purpose of subdivision one of section five hundred twenty-seven of this article, the term base period shall mean the first four of the last five completed calendar quarters ending with the week immediately preceding the filing of a valid original claim.

For the purpose of paragraph (a) of subdivision two of section five hundred twenty-seven of this article, the term base period shall mean the last four completed calendar quarters ending with the week immediately preceding the filing of a valid original claim.

§520 as amended by L. 1951, Ch. 645, effective June 4, 1951, and further amended by L. 1998 Ch., 589,

effective April 1, 1999.

Can you get unemployment if you worked for a nonprofit organization in Ohio?

Religious nonprofits have the option to not pay unemployment to the state. If they choose not to pay unemployment then the employee cannot collect unemployment. If they do pay unemployment costs to the state then the employee can collect unemployment benefits. Nonreligious organizations do have to pay unemployment, but they can pay the state one of two ways. As a state tax rated employer (same as a for profit company) or as a direct reimbursurer. In this case the employee is able to collect unemployment benefits. Referenced from www.chooseust.com
