If you love the child and want him or her to succeed in life, you should support the child through college if at all possible and help him or her get settled in their first job. Legally, you need not support a child past age 18.

The age in which child support ends is in any state is always determined by the stipulation in the latest child support order. Judges can mandate an order that supercedes the age cited in state law if they so choose. Likewise, a judge may order child support to cease at any time, regardless of the age of the minor child(ren). A person paying support should never assume that once the child reaches the state's age of majority they can cease payment, unless it is clearly stated in the court order.
