The most common carbon monoxide detectors are small independent units, very similar to smoke detectors. Simply twist or pry the outer cover off and you will see two screws holding it to the ceiling or wall. Loosen these screws and the unit will usually twist slightly to come off. Re-install the new one in exactly the opposite way.

They need to be the replaced no less often than every ten years.

But you should check that the batteries are working AT LEAST once a month
