In high kill animal shelters, the dogs are kept for a maximum of 9 days before they are euthanized. they give a 9 day frame either for the rightful owner to claim the animal back or to see if it can be adopted. Sadly, most of the animals are euthanized. Especially, pregnant dogs and small puppies are euthanized right away. They have absolutely no chance of survival in these shelters.

It depends on many factors, such as the condition the animal is in, the amount of space left in the shelter to keep the animal, the animal's character and behaviour, its age etc. The animal may be put to sleep even within 24 hours if its condition is really bad and it is necessary to end its misery. It may also be put to sleep if it is extremely aggressive and has hurt somebody, or if it is too old. If it has stayed in the shelter for too long and nobody wants to adopt it, it will also be put to sleep.

The SPCA cares for animals very much. For this reason, they do not set a time limit on how long a dog would stay before being euthanized.
