It depends on whether your taking medicine to help get rid of it, or your just letting it go it's course. With medicine, the pain should begin to subside in 1-3 days after you start taking antibiotics. Oral antibiotics are usually given 3-4 days worth to know that its effective. It is changed to a higher medicine or "class" if there is no improvement at this time.

24 to 48 hours is typical time for a sore throat. contact your physician if it persists longer than that.

It may be a more serious condition if it doesn't get better by that time frame.
