How long after a head injury can a child fall asleep?

When a child has bumped their head, to a point where you may be concerned about a concussion, then you need to call your pediatrician and seek advice. There are important signs and symptoms to watch for in a child with a potential head-injury, and he or she should be taken to the emergency room immediately if they appear. They include: # Loss of consciousness (even if brief) # Seizures # Confusion # Weakness or lethargy # Vomiting # Changes in mentation or personality # Intractible crying # Numbness or tingling in extremities If the head injury was the result of a fall greater than the child's standing height, or the result of external force (being bumped by a car or pushed against a hard surface), then summon your local Emergency Medical Services and leave the child in the position he or she fell, unless they cannot breathe. If you need to clear the airway, do so very carefully and with assistance to keep the head and neck inline with the rest of the body. Keep the child calm and still, as they need to be properly immobilized by the EMS crew to prevent further injury to head and possibly the spine.

My mother always said that you had to wait an hour and that was confirmed by a doctor some years later, but we have a nurse call line that is 24 hours so that, in case you don't want to go to the ER you can get advice from a nurse. I had called the line when my 18 month old fell out of his crib and the nurse that answered my call said that new studies showed that it is not harmful for a child to fall asleep after a minor head injury. Now, some of the studies as of late have been, shall we say, misinterpreted. Bottom line is, I don't know anyone who's child has lapsed into a coma after hitting their head nor have I ever heard stories to that effect. That being said, it is better to err on the side of caution where one's child is concerned so my advice is use your best judgement. Keep a close eye on your baby for ten minutes or so if he/she calms down relatively quickly there's probably nothing to worry about; if he/she continues to cry maybe an extra hour before bedtime isn't such a bad idea.

Well honestly u should keep the child awake

until aproved by a doctor. If the child is acting normal and is not feeling pain and has a appitite i think ur good

Absoultly NO! They could have a concusion based on how hard they banged it. Call a local doctor, or if it is serious, go to Doctors on Duty. Signs of concusion are sleepiness, and diziness.
