Under normal conditions the female blowflies (i.e. blue bottles and green bottles) lay their eggs on dead animals, the smell of which can attract them from a distance of several kilometers. They also lay eggs on other decomposing matter and on feces.

The eggs hatch in less than a day and the larvae burrow straight down into the food source. They grow very rapidly and will be full size within a about a week, and then they will normally leave the carrion. If the larvae have no opportunity to bury themselves in the ground they will crawl around until they find a suitable place in which to pupate.

It can take as little as a couple days or as long as a couple weeks for flea eggs to hatch. Upon reaching adulthood, fleas may live a few more weeks, or up to a year or longer depending on numerous external factors.

Fleas usually don't survive after 100 days, even if they live on a host (the animal on which they feed from).

However, without a host, they have no food source, and they may die between 2 and 14 days. The same can't be said for flea eggs and larvae, which do not require a host and can reach high populations.

Though a flea itself has a short life span, a female flea can produce at least 50 eggs per day, which can remain alive for several months or several years under the right conditions. That is why fleas can be difficult to get rid of.
