Short answer: it depends on several factors, but 5-7 years is common, while it can often be even longer. Or possibly shorter. To begin with, there are several varieties of Walnut trees of both of the 2 basic different types, each with with a range of age to sexual maturity (to the age at which they will produce seeds). The 2 basic common types would be Black Walnuts (a native tree, commonly seen growing "wild" in the Southern states) and the so-called "English" walnuts, most often intentionally planted and hybridized from developed stock originating in a distant part of the world. (For those of you who are not familiar with the 2 types, The Black Walnut tree produces a nut with a very thick, hard to crack "shell", with a relatively small percentage of strongly flavored nutmeat when compared to a simiarly sized, but much thinner shelled, milder flavored "English" walnut that is the source of most of our domestic walnut crop in the USA.) Next, some Walnut trees are top grafted to rootstocks of a variety other than their own for different reasons (disease resistance, early maturity, suitability to different growing conditions, etc. If they are not grafted, they are called seedlings. Next, local growing conditions can and do significantly influence the sexual maturity of Walnut trees. Those grown in a Southern location of the USA (for example Georgia) will often mature 1 to several years ahead of the same variety and obtained from the same nursery, but grown in a more Northern location (Wisconsin). The same holds true for many fruit trees as well. Next, top grafted Walnut trees will often mature one to several years sooner than the exact same variety grown out as a seedling.

Hazel nuts are harvested in October in most places. If you have nuts falling off the tree, then they are ready for harvesting.
