That really depends on what muscle is strained and how did the injury occur,and what treatments you have been doing or not doing?...
I would say in general that if you have been doing the ice for about a week,and then moist heat and taking OTC Motrin and the like and some gentle stretching,but also resting the injured part...that if it's not getting better within 2-3 weeks you need to see your provider for further evaluation.

Honestly, it depends on each person, and how much rest they are getting. If you haven't been doing limited lifting, and you haven't been relaxing and letting it heal, it is going to take a lot longer than it would for someone who has.
