I believe it should be a couple of weeks. However, after 2 years of waiting for a spot above my belly button to heal, I finally managed to get an appointment with the specialist at the local hospital. The spot was removed with an apple corer type device and four stitches closed the wound. Relief was mine, but briefly. Two weeks later the spot returned. I await a return visit to hospital. At the initial visit to have spot removed, the nurse said that there were still internal stitches in my stomach. This was strange, because the last surgery I had was 13 years ago! This to repair an umbelical hernia!! Can't wait to see the consultant again. I believe it should be a couple of weeks. Internal stitches usually take between 6 and 8 weeks to dissolve. It is normal to be able to feel them and is important not to rub or poke at the surgical site.

It may depend on where the stitches are, but when I got my wisdom teeth pulled it took about a week (7 days) for all of the stitches to finally dissolve.

In my case, approximately 7 to 10 days. However, every person is different. I would not advise smoking after surgery, as this can retard the healing process.
