Sunlight reaches the Moon about 8 minutes after it leaves the Sun, virtually the same time it takes to reach Earth. The Moon can be up to 1.25 light-seconds closer or farther from the Sun. Moonlight (reflected sunlight) takes about that long, 1.2 to 1.3 seconds, to reach the Earth.

It will take practically the same time for sunlight to reach the Moon as it does to reach the Earth, around 8.3 minutes. This could be longer or shorter due to the Earth's position in orbit around the Sun, or the Moon's position in orbit around the Earth.

At the Earth's closest approach to the Sun, light travelling at 299,792,458 m/sec will take 488 seconds (8.1 min) to travel the 146,398,000 km to the Earth. The Moon is only a maximum of 1.2 seconds closer or farther away.

At aphelion, the sunlight will travel the 151,398,000 km in 505 seconds (8.4 min).

The moon is about 240,000 miles away (220 to 252 thousand). The speed of light is 186,000 miles per second.

240,000/186,000 = 1.29 seconds. So it takes light about 1.3 seconds to travel from the moon to the earth.

The Sun's light takes about 8 minutes 20 seconds to travel from the Sun to the Earth, a time that varies a little as the Earth follows its elliptical orbit around the Sun. When the Moon is "new", you can trip off about 1.3 seconds, because the Moon is between the Earth and the Sun; at the full moon, the Moon is on the other side of the Earth, so add 1.3 seconds.

And again, the Moon follows an elliptical path around the Earth, so these times will also vary, from about 1.2 seconds to 1.4 seconds.

It takes light from the Sun about 8.3 minutes to reach the Moon, and it takes another 1.4 seconds for the light bouncing off the Moon to reach the Earth.

well speed of light c=3x10^8, average distance to the moon s=378022 km

t=s/c, so the average time for light to travel to the moon is 1.26 seconds

24 hours ! Since the moon rotates once on its axis as it travels around the earth, it always has part of its surface facing directly at the sun.

What phases of the moon are the moon and the sun visible in the sky?

Strictly speaking, the exact moment of "Full Moon" is the only time when the sun and moon can not bein the sky at the same time ... the Full moon rises just as the sun sets.At every other moon phase, the sun and moon are in the sky simultaneously during SOME part of the day.New Moon: Sun and moon are in the same direction in the sky. As long as one is up the other is up,but you can't see the moon, so forget about it.First week: Moon rises after the sun, a delay that grows from zero to six hours during the week. Then they're both in the sky until the sun sets.Second week: Moon rises after the sun, a delay that grows from 6 hours to 12 hours during the week. Then they're both in the sky until the sun sets.Full Moon: Moon rises just as sun sets.Third week: Moon rises before the sun, a lead that dwindles from 12 hours to 6 hours during the week. Then they're both in the sky until the moon sets.Fourth week: Moon rises before the sun, a lead that dwindles from 6 hours to zero during the week,Then they're both in the sky until the moon sets.
