You have a total of three days to stop the moon. But, it is impossible to beat it that fast. You have to play the Song of Time everytime the moon is about to hit in order to start over. Otherwise, the moon will destroy everything. So, in reality, you have as long as you need.

But you CAN collect all the items such as furniture,pictures,clothes,fossils,fish,bugs,songs,ect.
If you see,on the top of Nook's catalog in his store you can find a number of all the items out of the total collected.
EX- 456/567
If you can manage this, it takes about
ONE YEAR, no less. It usally takes more because you'd have to play daily. So that's the answer!
