To become a brain surgeon you need to take the following steps:

1.) Graduate from high school and apply and get accepted to a university.

2.) At a 4 year university you will work towards a bachelors degree in pre-medicine or pre-health with at least a GPA of 3.5 or better. Beginning your senior year in college you will start appplying to medical schools.

3.) You will attend a 4 year medical school. Near graduation you will need to apply for a residency program at a graduate school of medicine.

4.) Once in a residency program it will depend upon which field you enter as to how long your residency will be. Some are 3 years such as family practice. Surgeons can be in a residency program for 4 to 5 years. Once you are in a residency program you can specialize in your chosen field.

So the total time to become a brain surgeon or Neurosurgeon, not counting high school, is roughly 12 years. (Plus or minus a few years.) To become a brain surgeon you need to take the following steps:

PhD is a scientific or education degree. Neurosurgeons are physicians and must earn a medical degree such as the Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (D.O.), Bachelor of Medicine/Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS), or Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) degree and complete an appropriate residency in neurosurgery before becoming a brain surgeon. There are four years of medical school, and then the residency years (2 or 3), then specialized education in specific field for another three years, and internship again for another 2 possibly ... maybe in 10 or 11 years the PhD might be able to take the surgeons exam with the medical board.

How many years or college do you have to take to become a brain surgery doctor?

At least two, and more probably three or four. You then have four years of medical school. A newly graduated (from medical school) doctor does not simply get to run out and go into business as a brain surgeon, they have to do a "residency" in their specialty. For neurosurgery, the typical length of this residency is 6 or 7 years.
