How long does it take to become a teacher? |
[Edit] |
Answer
To be a teacher, (In England in either primary or secondary schools) you need to gain a degree, in either a specialist subject or education. If you choose a subject route (eg Maths, English etc.) you also need to study for a PGCE (Post Graduate Certificate in Education) Most Secondary teachers follow this route, and most primary teachers combine their education requirement within their subject degree.
This means that a teacher would complete the following pattern of education:
Primary School
Reception Y1 Y2 Y3
Junior School Y4 Y5 Y6
Secondary School Y7 Y8 Y9 Y10 Y11
College / sixth form Y12 Y13
University Either 3 or 4 year degree including teaching practice
or
a 3 year subject specific degree and a 1 year PGCE (This includes teaching practice)
This makes a total of 18 years studying, although the last four are lots of fun. For more information call TTA Teacher Training Agency on 0845 6000991 (www.teach.gov.uk)
Answer
To become teacher certified within the United Sates, it takes approximately four years of undergraduate course work in either Early Childhood Education (grades Pre-K through fourth) or Education (Grades Fourth through twelfth). In other words, an individual needs to complete a Bachelor's Degree. Still, this would be for an entry level position as a teacher. Most schools today are requiring further graduate study leading to a Master's Degree even after being hired. There are also alternate routes an individual can take, however if becoming a teacher is your career goal, it is better to take a teaching program of study.
