To become Chartered (The professional recognition) you must undertake 3+ years of professional development and then take a test with the ICE. This depends on the type of job you have, i.e. Consultancy or Contracting.
Neither is better than the other; it's a matter of which you feel you would enjoy more. If you like to help people, and you have good 'people skills' then you may want to be a doctor. If you prefer a more industrial atmosphere, and have an interest in design and construction, then you may prefer to be an engineer. Both professions require a lot of college, but you can become an engineer in four years of college, while it takes almost three times that long to become a doctor. Which ever you choose, do it because it's what you feel you will really enjoy doing and not because of the pay, work hours, etc. since this may be your career for the rest of your life.
