It depends on various things. Right now in the Marine Corps promotion is fairly due to the conflict in Iraq. Many senior Marines are leaving early (Usually due to family problems) or get out after 4 years, so promotion and bonuses are pretty high...its all about manpower.

It also depends on how bad you want it. You always compete against your peers. In order to get promoted you must attend schools, get good evaluations from your superior, good physical fitness score, good rifle score...and such. Standards are high...But that is what you expect in the Corps.

Ive been in for 8 years and recently got selected for E-8....

One to two years to 1st Lt. Another 2 to 3 years to Captain. So, depending on experience, need, and MOS, 3 to 5 years.

What is the highest rank in US Marine Corp?

The highest rank in the Marines, by title and rank, is the Commandant of the Marine Corps. The position is currently held by 4-Star General James T. Conway. The position holds 4-Star General rank, regardless of the officer's actual rank. For example, a 2 or 3 star General can be selected and confirmed by the Senate for that position, and thereby gains 4-Star rank by virtue of holding that position, but would revert to their former rank when they left. That's why most retire after serving (your pension is based on highest rank achieved), though not all do.
