This depends on the type of fracture, the severity, age of the patients and several other factors. In general, children's fracture are stable by 3 to 6 weeks but complete healing only occurs after many months.

I was 53 when I broke my elbow by falling from a height onto a cement floor. It was a modest break with only one piece of bone breaking away. I refused to go to the hospital until the next day, when the pain and swelling became pretty intolerable. Two painful x-rays and a fairly casual doctor wrapped a half-cast on it (to allow the swelling to go down). A one week visit and another cast was put on and that was removed at 4 weeks. My elbow was still painful but the doctor gave me the option to put another cast on for 2 more weeks or just wear a sling and an ace bandage and take it easy on the arm. I chose the latter and gradually incorporated the arm into my activities as the comfort level rose. The sling was gone in a week and the ace bandage was removed gradually over 2 weeks as the pain went away. It healed excellently and I have had no ill effects over the last 3 years.

What is a good way to treat the pain caused in the elbow as a result of arthritic joint damage?

One way is to remove the damaged bone in the joints and replace it with total elbow replacement surgery. The decision to have this done should be made carefully and after having familiarized yourself as well as possible with the nature of your elbow joint and the in and outs of elbow replacement surgery. When undergoing total elbow replacement surgery, the natural joints are removed and replaced with an artificial hinge made of metal and plastic. This implant is inserted into the bone where the joint was forming a hinge and ending the painful contact that was being made between the forearm bones and the humerus.

Does elbow strength exercises get rid of the pain?

That depends on the problem, Speaking from personal experience (I am about to have a complete elbow replacement) I find that keeping up the use of the muscles around the affected joint eases the pain. However the only time it does not hurt is when I hold it still and in one of a very limited number of positions.
