If you quit cold turkey anywhere from 2 to 4 weeks depending on what dose and how long you've been taking it. It is recommended to slowly taper off with 5mg every 2 to 3 weeks. If you go to a methadone clinic they will try to keep you on the drug for a year or two. It helps to eat a healthy diet and exercise.

∙ 9y agoThey last longer than any other type of opiate withdrawals. It is far far worse than even heroin withdrawals. I was on methadone for about two years at 100mg and quit cold turkey when I was arrested one time, and I experienced withdrawal symptoms for 40+ days. I didn't sleep right for weeks and would just burst into tears several times a day for no reason at all cause it was so miserable. DO NOT QUIT COLD. DECREASE YOUR DOSE VERY GRADUALLY, OE SWITCH TO SUBOXONE AND THEN GRADUALLY TAPPER OF OF IT. That is just the way I wished I would have quit. After being off methadone for about 45 days I could not take it anymore and still felt terrible and was still having to use a cane to walk. So I took suboxone for while and then gradually got of it and it is so much easier to deal with quitting. Good luck!

∙ 13y agomethadone is usually taken once a day and remains in your system for 24 hours, it might take a higher dose and/or a few days on it, but it will last the entire day. that is what it is made for.
