How long does negative information stay on credit file?

[Edit]

The best way to clear up credit report is to contact each crediter and make sure it has been removed, after you've paid it off. It will remain on there indiffently. Don't believe it when people say it's only so many years.Thats NOT true. After you pay off a debt it is your responsiblity to make sure they remove it. If you just pay it and assume they'll do the rest, your wrong. I personally had a medical bill still on my credit report four years after it had been paid.
