I don't think the tissues of either the body or the brain die instantly upon severing of the head. Therefore, neither the body or the head and brain are "dead" at the instant of severing. Everything I've read or been told over the years indicates that tissues continue to live until dying from lack of both oxygen and blood sugars. This process could take several minutes depending on ambient temperatures.

As for the sending and receiving of any signals, it seems that as a cut and exposed nerve end on my hand sends a pain signal, then a severed bundle of nerves in the neck exposes many, probably thousands of nerve ends, which then still should be sending pain signals to the brain. Based on that, it seems that as long as the brain retains function [life in the cells], then it could sense the pain of the thousands of exposed nerve ends in the severed neck.

Although we laymen can discuss the issue, it is clearly obvious that the answer to this question will only be accurately defined by a medical professional, probably best by a Neurologist. j3h.

"it doesn't, as soon as your head has parted from your torso it has lack of blood and you die a quick and painful death"

This is not completely correct. The Actual decapitation(the head being severed from the body) is not what actually kills the brain. It is the lack of oxygen and other important chemicals that are found in the blood stream.

The brain is chemically alive for approximately 13 seconds (this depends on a number of variables, but this is average) It can survive on the ATP energy, until oxygen well, runs out.

So theoretically the individual could still be conscious for part of the 13 seconds(approx.). Although the other variables we have to consider about consciousness are
  • The initial blow from the Decapitation
  • And the loss of blood from the head, this would be the ultimate way to describe light headed-ness, simply you would faint
  • And probably a 100,000 more depending on the exact circumstances, But I have a life...
